When I started traveling internationally post smart phone, I was a little spoiled by visiting Taiwan early on. There getting a SIM card to use for your visit is quick, easy, and inexpensive. I didn’t realize until I made a trip through Malaysia, Indonesia, India, and Singapore (see How to Spend Two Weeks in Indonesia and India) that it can be much more difficult if not downright impossible in a number of places.
In Indonesia we tried to rely on Wi-Fi service, which was a bit of a nightmare when we tried to leave the airport and get in touch with our Uber driver. In India (at least when we went), the process of getting a SIM card takes weeks, so we were long gone before we would have been able to complete the process.
