“Make things as simple as possible but no simpler.”
-Albert Einstein, 1879.
Jeremy:
My first international trip I had a backpack and three suitcases. I felt like a train, I moved like a train, my back was strained.
My second trip for three months I had a backpack and a suitcase. So much better.
Eventually I was able to travel for two months with just a carry on size backpack. I got into a new country and was able to start exploring, didn’t have to stop to find a place to store my stuff, didn’t have to wait to check in or beg them to store my things until check in.
It might seem obvious, but some people don’t realize: When you are a large person your clothing is large too. For example three pairs of my shoes are usually too big to fit in a carry on. Although as a bigger person I could just carry a bigger pack, I prefer a carry-on only approach to traveling whenever possible.
Minimalism
I find that simpler travel is happier travel – so I simplify and streamline for greater contentment. When I invest in experiences and memories, not more possessions, I am more satisfied with my travel journey.
Minimalism can mean different things for different people. And different things for different situations. What I pack for a weekend getaway, a month in Europe, or a move across the world will all be different. But they have one thing in common. Clearing the clutter and paring life down to the essentials that bring us contentment and comfort.
What’s best? You decide. I just want you to have the tools to make the best decision for yourself.
